Join NVMS for a unique weekend of music education, performance, and appreciation:
A Percussion Pairing Weekend, featuring the Drum Brothers
On Nov 4-5, two complimentary events will be offered to the public:
  • Friday, November 4: a large, public performance and lecture from 6-8 pm
  • Saturday, November 5: a small, participatory, hands-on drum workshop from 11 am – 1 pm
Both events are free and will be held at the Alpine Theatre Project’s location at the Mountain Center (6475 Hwy 93S, Whitefish MT)
FRIDAY: Drum Brothers Public Performance
     A five-piece ensemble presents an educational evening of performance and lecture
     Doors at 6. Event 630-8 pm
     The public performance will be presented in a lecture-demonstration-participation format. Content will include performances of traditional West African rhythms and original music from the Drum Brothers repertoire. The evening will also include an introduction to the instruments the group plays and the countries and traditions they come from (for example, the Australian didgeridoo and West African djembe and doun doun drums). A discussion of the different sounds of the instruments, drum languages, the communication between instruments, and traditional and contemporary uses. Light audience participation includes teaching some simple clapping rhythms to illustrate the concept of polyrhythm. If opportunity and space allow, there may be times during when we’ll encourage the audience to dance. Pre-registration for Friday is not necessary. Refreshments will be available for purchase at the ATP’s concession stand.
SATURDAY: Drum Brothers Percussion Workshop
     Two instructors lead discussion and an interactive drum circle for 35 people.
     Doors at 11 am. Workshop starts at 11:30 am.

Drums will be available and everyone is welcome (children must be 10 or older). Participants will learn beginning rhythms and explore the techniques and polyrhythmic interplay of West African Drumming. Come experience the joy and power of community music-making. “If you have a heartbeat, you have rhythm!”

The workshop will be presented at the Alpine Theatre Project’s location at the Mountain Center Mall.
